PERSONAL MESSAGE

John Seongho Choi 최성호 (he/ him/ his)

I am a Canadian filmmaker based in Toronto and belong to the South Korean diaspora ("Gyopo" in Korean). The search for my own identity has helped me better understand the stories that speak to me centred around themes of equality and diversity. I acknowledge the privilege I have inherited in this country at the loss of a great many people's lives and genocide of the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (and across the planet). I take on the path of fulfilling my own Treaty obligations in this country and the benevolence of the original stewards of this land. It is also the most important first step towards racial justice. How can we build the tower of reconciliation if we don’t begin by laying down the first brick of TRUTH to our foundation? I can barely keep up with the rapid rate of information and technology refreshing constantly right in the palms of our hands and recognize the unprecedented power these little yet massive computer smartphones can yield.

I recently testified in person at the CRTC “The Path Forward” hearings in Ottawa alongside esteemed organizations including Canadian Independent Screen Fund (CISF), BIPOC TV & Film, Black Screen Office (BSO), Racial Equality Screen Office (RESO), Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) and more. Truly a first for our nation and a privilege to have the opportunity to present my stories and experience advocating for equal representation and diversity. I’m confident that meaningfulness is achieved through storytelling immersed in creativity and is part of reminding us who we are and that we are alive and have purpose. I am still finding my own voice and in a constant cycle of a firmware update. My storytelling is just beginning.

THANK YOU
